Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction surgery is a common procedure for men with Gynecomastia, also known as enlarged breasts. Men who suffer from Gynecomastia, often have self-esteem issues due to the shape and size of their breasts. Many men with Gynecomastia try to decrease the size of their breasts through exercise. Unfortunately, exercise has little to no impact on the breast size of these men.

What should I do if I have Gynecomastia?

For men with enlarged breasts, male breast reduction surgery is the best option. This procedure involves two steps: liposuction and then a small breast incision to get any leftover glandular tissue.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery Expectations

The time it takes to complete a male breast reduction surgery is different for every patient. However, the average time of this procedure is 2-5 hours. Male Breast Reduction is done under general anesthesia and most patients go home the same day of surgery. It is important to note that more complicated surgeries will require an overnight stay for observation. After the surgery, patients will need at least one week to recuperate.

Recovery Period After Male Breast Reduction Surgery

After a male breast reduction procedure, men can expect a great deal of swelling and bruising. After about one week the bruising will subside. The swelling may not completely disappear for a few weeks to a couple months after the procedure. For the first few weeks after surgery, patients should plan to limit their activity. In addition to taking it easy, men should also expect to wear a compression garment to help control swelling. 4-6 weeks after surgery, men can return to their typical lifestyle.
