What Is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is used to reduce the prominence of ears that stick out too far from the side of the head. Ears that seem too large or protruding can have serious consequences to the self esteem of anyone, especially children. Otoplasty patients can overcome their problems and improve their self-image.
Can I Benefit from Otoplasty?
If you are affected by ears that stick out from the side of your head, have ears that are too large or are different shapes, then you are a good candidate for Otoplasty. Both children and adults in good physical and mental health qualify.
Otoplasty Procedure
Otoplasty takes approximately two hours and is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Small incisions are made in the backs of the ears where they will be almost impossible to see. The ear cartilage is re-sculpted through these incisions.
After the surgery a head wrap is necessary for 5-7 days. During this period of time, a special headband is needed until the ears fully heal. You will need to avoid all activity for a day or so after the surgery and protect the ears from injury or extreme temperatures for at least a month. You will need to sleep with your head elevated for one week after the procedure, and stay off your sides for two weeks after that.
Otoplasty Results
The results of ear pinning surgery should be apparent from the moment the head wrap is removed. However, it might take up to several weeks for the swelling to go away.
